Senior forwards Samarion Evans and Parker Haas lead Burleson in scoring as Burleson holds lead for almost entire game
BURLESON — Samarion Evans scored 19 points and Parker Haas scored 16 as the Burleson Elks beat the Lorena Leopards 50-36 Friday at Burleson High School in Burleson’s home opener.
Burleson (2-0) never lost the lead after junior forward Baron Harrison made an and-one layup and hit the following free throw to bring the score to 8-6 in the first quarter.
Lorena cut Burleson’s lead to 29-28 in the third quarter before Evans made a free throw and Haas made a three-pointer to start a 19-8 run by Burleson to finish the game.

Evans’s block denied Lorena’s attempt to tie the game at 30 in the third quarter. One of his steals was followed by Lorena fouling him on a fast-break dunk attempt. Evans—five-of-six from the free-throw line—made both free throws to increase Burleson’s lead to 46-33 in the fourth quarter.
After the win Burleson head coach Anthony Dees said he thought Evans played great and made the right plays.
“[Evans] just wants to win and go out there and help his team win any way he can,” Dees said. “I’m very proud of him and the way he played tonight.”
Senior forward Haas made a game-high four three-pointers on seven attempts—making six of nine total shots—and added three steals.
Burleson finished with 15 steals with junior guard Nathaniel Silva leading with six and adding two rebounds and two assists.
Dees said the defense “was there” and “good enough to get a win.”
Junior forward Harrison added seven points, four rebounds, two assists and two steals.
Freshman guard Landon Logan scored six points on two three pointers and led Burleson with three assists. Burleson fans seemed proud of their freshman guard, chanting “He’s-A-Freshman” when Logan was on the court at times.
Burleson is 2-0 for the first time in Dees’s tenure, beating the Waco-Robinson Rockets 67-61 Tuesday in Waco for its first win of the 2023-24 season.
Dees said it feels good to be 2-0, and he’s proud of how hard the players worked over the offseason. He said he loves the way his team plays hard for each other, which he thinks is the “most important thing.”
“I love our camaraderie, our togetherness throughout this journey,” Dees said. “I’m excited to see as it continues to grow as we get better and we continue to grow throughout the season.”
Burleson looks to get to 3-0 when it plays the South Hills Scorpions (0-3) Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Burleson High School.
