BURLESON — The No. 23-ranked Centennial Spartans beat their crosstown rival Burleson Elks 71-36 Tuesday at Centennial High School in the “Battle of The Hoops” the day after being ranked in the Top-25 for the first time in the 2024-25 season.

After taking a 6-4 lead in the first quarter, Centennial (5-1 in district, 22-5 overall) never relinquished the lead en-route to winning its eighth straight and handing Burleson (2-4, 17-11) its third-straight loss.

Centennial kept its foot on the gas and ran up the score the whole game, which Centennial head coach Larry Petite said was important after being ranked No. 23 Monday.

“I knew the kids would come out and kind of be overhyped because of being ranked, but I let them know that that number don’t mean anything,” Petite said after the win. “We want to keep working. Being ranked is not the goal; the goal is [playing in the State Championship Tournament in] San Antonio.”

Centennial took its first lead of the game on a fast-break layup by junior guard Keylan Jones in the first quarter. Jones was fouled on the shot and made his free-throw to complete the and-one and give Centennial a 7-4 lead it never lost.

Jones’s fastbreak layup followed two by sophomore guard Dontre Grandberry, who scored Centennial’s first four points and was one of three to score double-digits for Centennial.

Grandberry did it all for Centennial as he scored 12 points, dished a game-high four assists, collected a game-high four steals, grabbed four rebounds and blocked a shot.
