BURLESON — The Burleson Elks earned their first district win of 2024 with a 9-0 victory over the Grapevine Mustangs Friday at Burleson ISD Stadium on Burleson’s homecoming night.
Junior receiver Jaden Hernandez scored the game’s only touchdown on a 19-yard pass from sophomore quarterback Andrew Sparks in the back of the end zone to increase the Elks’ lead over Grapevine to 9-0 with five minutes left in the game.
Hernandez finished with 70 receiving yards and the touchdown on five catches.

Sparks completed 18 of 24 passes for 153 yards and the touchdown pass and led the Elks with 78 rushing yards on 17 carries.

After a scoreless first half and eight minutes of the third quarter, senior kicker Gavin Kiene kicked a 29-yard field goal to give the Elks a 3-0 lead with 3:30 left in the third.
This was Elks head coach Phillip Tanner’s first district win as head coach in his first season at the helm.
Senior receiver Landon Smith led the Elks with eight catches for 61 yards in the win.
Junior running back Nate Jackson rushed for 29 yards on nine carries.
The Elks (1-2 in district, 2-3 overall) are in sixth place of District 3-5A after the win. Grapevine (0-4, 0-6) is in ninth place.
The Elks will look to maintain momentum and win back-to-back games for the first time in 2024 when they face The Colony Cougars (1-3, 3-3) Friday at 7 p.m. at Tommy Briggs Stadium in The Colony.

The Colony lost its last two district games against the first-place Mansfield Summit Tigers (3-0, 3-2) and third-place Seguin Cougars (3-1, 5-1)—who’ve both beaten Burleson in 2024—after beating the eighth-place Everman Bulldogs (1-3, 1-5) 51-32 September 20.
A win over The Colony would be the Elks’ second road win of the season after earning the season’s first win in a 13-8 victory over the Cleburne Yellow Jackets (0-2 in District 7-5A with Burleson’s crosstown-rival Centennial Spartans, 0-6 overall) September 6 in Cleburne.
The Elk kicker is #26 Gavin Kiene, not #28 Josh Davis.
