MANSFIELD — The Burleson Elks varsity basketball team lost 72-33 to the Mansfield Summit Jaguars in their first district game of the season Tuesday at Mansfield Summit High School.
Elks head basketball coach Anthony Dees was proud of the Elks for fighting through the loss against what he called a “really good” Mansfield Summit team, Dees said after the game.
The loss provided an opportunity for the Elks to see what the district looks like, but ultimately the Elks are focused on improving, Coach Dees said after the game.
“It’s a great opportunity for us to get better and see what the top of the top looks like and keep growing,” Dees said after the game.
Senior guard Tamaje Izuagbe led Burleson with 11 points as he made three of seven shot-attempts and made all five of his free throw-attempts in the loss.
The Elks made 34.4% of their shots and 31.2% of their three-pointers as a team.
Junior guard Parker Haas led the Elks with two made three-pointers as he scored six points. Sophomore forward Treaton Hall and sophomore guard Nathaniel Silva each added five points for the Elks.
Coach Dees is confident this young team (only two seniors) will grow and improve. His message to the team is to focus on the next game and “be ready to go to work tomorrow,” he said.
The Elks host the Mansfield Timberview Wolves in their district home-opener Friday at 7 p.m. at Burleson High School.
