MANSFIELD – Ava Ellis homered at the plate and earned the win as a pitcher as the Centennial Lady Spartans varsity softball team beat the Mansfield Timberview Wolves 19-2 Monday at Timberview High School.
The freshman pitcher Ellis earned the win as she surrendered no earned runs (two total runs) off two hits and a walk and struck out two batters through four innings pitched. She also went 3-for-4 at the plate with Centennial’s only home run, a double, two runs scored and a game-leading five RBIs.
Centennial scored at least four runs in each of the first four innings while holding Timberview to two runs, giving the undefeated-in-district Centennial a large enough lead (at least 15 runs) to end the game after four innings.
Ellis capped off Centennial’s six-run fourth inning with a two-run home run to right field to take a 19-1 lead and force Timberview to score at least four runs to avoid losing on the mercy rule.
Centennial started scoring with senior outfielder Olivia Martin’s RBI triple to right field to take a 1-0 lead with no outs in the top of the first inning. Centennial never surrendered the lead.
Martin scored a game-leading four runs and finished second behind Ellis with three RBIs as she went 4-for-4 with the triple and a double at the plate.
Senior shortstop/third baseman Bailey Lindemuth and junior center-fielder/shortstop Madison Haynes each scored three runs in the win. Lindemuth went 3-for-4 with an RBI. Haynes went 2-for-3 with a walk.
Lindemuth’s RBI single in the first inning brought her career-RBI count to a Centennial-record 176. She broke the record when she drove in five runs in a 17-0 win over Mansfield-Summit March 8.
Centennial (5-0 in district, 13-4 overall) is in first place in District 8-5A.
After following Monday’s win with a 13-2 victory over Seguin Tuesday, Centennial will face the Cleburne Yellow Jackets Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Cleburne High School.
