BURLESON – Madison Haynes hit a two-run home run and a two-run triple as the Centennial Lady Spartans varsity softball team beat the Arlington Seguin Lady Cougars 13-2 Tuesday at Centennial High School.
Seguin scored first and tied the game in the top of the second inning, but Centennial didn’t surrender another run after taking a 4-2 lead on junior shortstop Haynes’s two-run triple to left field in the bottom of the second.
Haynes led Centennial with five RBIs and three runs scored as she went 3-for-4 at the plate with two stolen bases and the game’s only home run and triple.
Senior right-fielder/third-baseman Hannah McCurry scored from second on freshman pitcher Ava Ellis’s line-drive single to right field to give Centennial a 12-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning. The 10-run lead, if held through the end of the top of the fifth inning, was enough to end the game on a mercy rule and remain undefeated in district.
McCurry went 2-for-3, led the team with two stolen bases and scored two runs.
Ellis earned her second straight win on the mound in as many days as she entered the game in the third inning and pitched three shutout innings of relief, striking out three batters and allowing four hits and a walk. At the plate, she went 1-for-1 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. She pitched a complete four-inning game and homered in a 19-2 win over Mansfield-Timberview Monday.
Haynes scored Centennial’s first run from second base on senior center-fielder Bailey Lindemuth’s line-drive double to center field, tying the game 1-1 in the bottom of the first inning. Haynes stole second to get into scoring position after hitting a leadoff single to right.
Lindemuth was second behind Haynes with three RBIs as she went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Centennial’s only double. Lindemuth now has a Centennial-record 179 career-RBIs.
Seguin senior second-baseman/shortstop Morgan Acosta hit an RBI single to right field to give Seguin a 1-0 lead in the top of the first. Acosta went 2-for-3 with the RBI.
Seguin scored another run on center-fielder Darianna Martin’s double to center field to tie the game 2-2 in the top of the second inning. Martin went 1-for-2 with a walk, the RBI and a run scored.
Centennial (6-0 in district, 14-4 overall) is in first place in District 8-5A.
Centennial plays the Cleburne Lady Yellow Jackets Tuesday at 7 p.m. at Cleburne High School.
