Jackson scores lone touchdown for Elks in loss to Seguin
One touchdown wouldn't be enough in Burleson's first district game of 2024
BURLESON – Nate Jackson scored the Burleson Elks varsity football team’s only touchdown in a 39-7 loss to the Seguin Cougars Thursday at Burleson ISD Stadium.
The junior running back Jackson’s touchdown came on a one-yard rush to get the Elks on the board and bring the score to 25-7 in the second quarter.
Jackson ran for 38 yards and the touchdown on 16 carries in the loss.
Burleson head coach Phillip Tanner said Jackson is a resilient workhorse.
Tanner also spoke highly of junior linebacker Donya Armstrong after the game.
“[Armstrong] had a motor,” Tanner said. “He knows the game, great football IQ, and he makes things happen on the back end.”
Armstrong led the Elks with seven tackles.
Seguin sophomore running back Isaac Bly scored a one-yard touchdown run to get Seguin on the board with 7:51 left in the first quarter. Seguin led for the rest of the game.
Just over two minutes after Bly’s touchdown, Sequin picked off Burleson sophomore quarterback Andrew Sparks and scored on a 39-yard interception return to bring the score to 13-0.
Tanner said you can’t turn the ball over against a good team like Seguin.
It wouldn’t get much better for the Elks. Seguin scored two more touchdowns–a four-yard run and a 61-yard pass–to bring the score to 25-0 in the second quarter.
After Jackson got the Elks on the board before halftime, Seguin scored the only touchdown of the third quarter on a 55-yard touchdown pass to increase its lead to 33-7.
Seguin scored the game’s final touchdown on a 23-yard run to bring the score to 39-7 with 10:50 left in the fourth quarter.
Tanner said he thought the Elks fought hard despite losing.
Other defensive standouts were junior defensive lineman Jiovani Thomas–six tackles and 1.5 sacks–and junior defensive back Jaden Hernandez–four tackles and an interception. Hernandez also had several nice downfield catches on offense.
After losing their first district game to Seguin (1-0 in district, 3-0 overall) the Elks (0-1, 1-2)will look to get in the district win column against the Mansfield Summit Jaguars (0-2) Friday at 7 p.m. at Summit High School in Summit’s first district game.
