BURLESON – The Cancer Warrior Martial Arts Program presented Kerr Middle School band director Catharine Klein with an honorary black belt in support of her fight with breast cancer at the Music For All National Festival February 26.
During preparations for the festival, Burleson ISD school-safety officer and karate grandmaster Richard Morris presented the honorary black belt to Klein along with the Cancer Warrior Martial Arts Program leader Kenneth Rebstock and members of Richard Morris Karate including Burleson ISD superintendent Bret Jimerson and school-safety officer Curt Brennan.
Klein was shocked by the “wonderful surprise” that made her night, she said in a Burleson ISD statement.
“I'm humbled and so appreciative and honored by the outpouring of support and love from students and families,” Klein stated.
That support for Klein from students and families includes organizing a benefit raising money for Klein’s medical expenses, Klein stated. The benefit involved a silent auction, performances by Burleson ISD students and alumni and vendors who donated a portion of their profits.
Parents, students, and alumni also participated in a meal-train while Klein was undergoing treatment, purchased items she needed during treatment and sent her words of encouragement, Klein stated.
Klein stated she feels extremely blessed by the “incredible” support.
An integral part of Klein’s support has been Kerr assistant band director Brendan Ross, who shared Klein’s story with Rebstock and facilitated the surprise presentation. Klein stated Ross, a friend and colleague she’s honored to have, stepped up “in every possible way” for the band during Klein’s cancer battle.
“Kerr Band would not be the same without his hard work and dedication,” Klein stated of Ross.
“In [Klein’s] battle against cancer, she fought not only for herself but for her family and students, embodying true determination and grit,” superintendent Jimerson stated. “She exemplifies the resilience of a warrior, not just in body, but in mind and spirit.”
Klein greatly appreciates how supportive and caring Burleson ISD has been for her, she stated.
Klein was diagnosed with breast cancer in July 2023 and has continued to lead Kerr band while battling with it.
