Lady Elks fall to Denton-Ryan in Bi-District Championship
Despite senior forward Kendall Carlock's 16-point, 12-rebound performance, the Lady Elks were eliminated from the playoffs Tuesday
HALTOM CITY – The Burleson Lady Elks varsity basketball team was eliminated from the playoffs as they fell 50-37 to the Denton Ryan Lady Raiders Tuesday at W.G. Thomas Coliseum.
After the Lady Elks outscored the District 7-5A champion Denton-Ryan 16-9 in the third quarter to bring the score to 36-28 to start the fourth quarter, Denton-Ryan outscored the Lady Elks 14-9 in the final quarter to seal their Bi-District Championship victory.
Lady Elks senior forward Kendall Carlock scored nine of her team-leading 16 points in the third quarter as the Lady Elks cut Denton-Ryan’s lead from 15 at halftime to eight by the end of the third quarter. Carlock also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and added a game-high three steals.
“[Carlock] is something every small child should idolize because of her character and her work ethic and her true feeling for the sport and how she honors that and will always be a contender because she wants it,” Lady Elks head coach Brenda Gomez said after the loss.
Gomez was proud of the way the Lady Elks competed in what could’ve been a blowout, she said. She said the team should’ve made more shots and should’ve boxed out better to get more rebounds. Denton-Ryan outrebounded the Lady Elks 31-24.
“Against a team like [Denton-Ryan], you can’t let down for a second, and we did,” Gomez said.
Senior guard Courtlyn Middlebrook was the Lady Elks’ second-leading scorer with nine points as she made three three-pointers. Senior guard E’marie Lewis led the team with four assists.
The Lady Elks (9-7 in district, 20-14 overall) made the playoffs for the first time since 2015 and the first time in Gomez’s three-year tenure.
