CLEBURNE, Texas - The Cleburne Railroaders (30-30) split its six-game series against the Winnipeg Goldeyes (23-35) last week to remain in second place before the All-Star break.
Trey Cumbie (2-6) pitched a quality start as he surrendered three earned runs on five hits and a walk and struck out seven batters through six innings pitched as Cleburne beat Winnipeg 7-4 in the series finale Sunday. Cumbie went 1-1 in the series, losing his fifth straight game as he surrendered four earned runs on eight hits and three walks through five innings pitched as Winnipeg beat Cleburne 5-2 in the series opener July 11.Â
Also pitching quality starts for Cleburne last week were Kasey Kalich (2-2) and Kevin Hilton (4-2).
Kalich surrendered three earned runs on six hits and two walks and struck out eight batters through six innings pitched as Winnipeg beat Cleburne 11-10 Thursday.Â
Hilton (4-2) won his third straight game as he surrendered two unearned runs (no earned runs) on one hit and three walks and struck out two batters through eight innings pitched as Cleburne beat Winnipeg 11-2 Saturday.
Rookie Blaze Brothers had the first hitless game of his American Association career as he went 0-for-3 with two walks and a run scored in Saturday’s win. Brothers is batting .302 with a home run, three RBIs and 10 runs scored through 10 games in 2023.
Fellow rookie Jarel McDade hit his first American Association homer in Thursday’s loss and went 8-for-22 from the plate with five RBIs in the series. McDade is batting .258 with a home run and five RBIs through 10 games in 2023.
Alex Jackson led Cleburne with eight RBIs in the series as he went 8-for-28 with a home run.
Cleburne begins the second half of the season with a three-game series against the league-best Kansas City Monarchs (36-22) Friday at 7:06 p.m. at La Moderna Field in Cleburne after the four-day All-Star break.
Zach Nehrir, Hill Alexander, Mark Karaviotis and Joe Corbett (2-3) represented Cleburne as the East Division All-Stars beat the West Division All-Stars 4-2 Tuesday in the 2023 American Association All-Star Game.
Karaviotis homered as he went 1-for-3 from the plate along with two RBIs in the All-Star Game. Nehrir and Alexander went hitless in the game.
Nehrir won the 2023 American Association Home Run Derby, beating teammate Alexander in the event semifinals.
Cleburne sits 6.5 games behind the first-place Milwaukee Milkmen (35-22) in the East Division ahead of the second half of the season.
