MANSFIELD – Landon Smith collected three base-hits and threw five no-hit innings as the Burleson Elks varsity baseball team beat the Mansfield Summit Jaguars 10-2 for its first district-win Monday at Summit High School.
The sophomore starting-pitcher Smith earned the win as he shutout Summit through five innings, striking out nine batters and allowing one baserunner – a leadoff walk in the bottom of the fifth inning. Batting second, Smith went 3-for-5 at the plate with an RBI, a run scored and a stolen base.
After scoring three runs in the first two innings and leading 3-0 through the first four innings, Burleson ran away with it when they scored four runs to take a 7-0 lead in the top of the fifth inning.
