BURLESON and JOSHUA – The Centennial Spartans varsity basketball team is tied with the Seguin Cougars for the fourth and final playoff spot after beating the Cleburne Yellow Jackets 82-49 Tuesday at Spartan Arena and beating the Joshua Owls 66-34 Friday in Joshua.
After the Spartans (7-7 in district, 12-18 overall) beat Joshua and Seguin (7-7, 18-13) lost 57-52 to the first-place undefeated-in-district Mansfield Summit Jaguars Friday, the Spartans officially tied Seguin for fourth-place.
Junior guard Abram Hicks and junior forward Jared Cox each scored a game-high 13 points in the win over Joshua.
Hicks also led the Spartans with 10 rebounds, four steals and four assists. Cox added six rebounds and three steals.
To start the week, five Spartans scored double-digit points in the Spartans’ season-high 82-point outing in the victory over Cleburne Tuesday.
Senior guard Iverson Moore scored a game-high 19 points and added four rebounds, four steals, three assists and two blocks against Cleburne.
Cox was the Spartans’ second-leading scorer with 16 points and added a team-high seven rebounds against Cleburne.
Sophomore guard Keylan Jones scored 13, freshman guard Levi Robinson scored 11, and Hicks scored 10 in the win. Hicks also led the team with eight assists and six steals.
In the final week of the regular season, the Spartans face the third-place Midlothian Panthers (9-4 in district, 19-11 overall) Tuesday at 8 p.m. and the sixth-place crosstown-rival Burleson Elks (5-9, 15-19) Friday at 8 p.m. at Spartan Arena.
Seguin plays at the second-place Mansfield Timberview Wolves (10-3, 23-8) Tuesday at 7 p.m. and at eighth-place Cleburne (2-9, 4-22) Friday at 7 p.m.
