Sports Report: Lady Spartans start 2024 2-0 and finish first-half of district-play in second place
Checking in on Centennial Spartans and Burleson Elks varsity basketball teams in the new year
Hello, readers,
With 2023 ending and 2024 beginning in the middle of the high-school basketball season, I thought it’d be a good time get the teams’ coaches’ thoughts on how last year went and their outlooks on the new year.
The Lady Spartans finished 2023 in second place and carried their strong play into the new year, beating Joshua Tuesday and Midlothian Friday. The Lady Elks also started 2024 with a win after “buying in” to head coach Brenda Gomez’s approach in 2023. The Spartans are also carrying momentum into the new year and learning to embrace individual roles after winning four of five games to end a lackluster first half of the 2023-24 season. The Elks have been all head coach Anthony Dees could ask for after a 3-13 district-season in 2022-23, in which they lost seniors and gave way to the current young, two-senior team.
This reports comes before the schools face off in crosstown-rivalry games Tuesday with the Lady Spartans heading to Burleson High School to play the Lady Elks at 5:30 p.m. and the Spartans taking on the Elks at 7 p.m.
