Johnson County's $60 million bond - Where will the money go?
JOHNSON COUNTY – Johnson County residents will get to vote whether to pass a $60 million transportation bond to address safety and mobility on Johnson County roadways at the November 5 election.
The bond will fund studies and construction to improve Johnson County roadways’ safety and mobility.
The bond would increase the Johnson County property-tax rate $0.0099–an increase of $24.92 annually for the average Johnson County home, Brandon Crisp reported in The Burleson Buzz in September.
The projects the bond will fund include:
Three projects totaling $25.3 million changing FM 917 segments ($11.5 million on 6.1 miles from West Links Drive to Chisholm Trail Parkway, $9.3 million on 4.1 miles from Thomas Street to the Egan railroad-crossing, $4.5 million on 1.7 miles from Chisholm Trail Parkway to Avenue F) from a two-lane rural highway without shoulders into a four-lane divided roadway section with curb and gutter and sidewalks on both sides and realigning some of the road’s sharp horizontal curves
Two projects totaling $10 million studying segments of FM 2280’s feasibility including $8.7 million on 5.7 miles from U.S. Route 67 to Egan to identify potential alignment options and $1.3 million on 7.9 miles from U.S. 67-Business to State Highway 174 to determine the “best future route” for FM 2280
A $6.3 million project adding shoulders, incorporating turn lanes, installing guardrails and rehabilitating pavement on 4.5 miles of East Renfro Street from County Road 602 to FM 917
A $5.1 million project on .4 miles of Hulen Street, constructing a four-lane divided roadway section with sidewalks and building an overpass bridge
A $2.2 million project on 1.9 miles of U.S. Route 67 Frontage Road from State Highway 171 to Hix Road, constructing two-lane frontage roads to fill existing gaps
A $2.2 million project on 1.6 miles in Downtown Godley from State Highway 171 to Links Drive that the county anticipates will involve reconstructing several intersections after studying the area’s operational traffic and involving the public to identify effective solutions
A $2 million project studying the feasibility of 1.3 miles of FM 917 at the Egan railroad-crossing to identify the optimal future route to connect FM 917 on either side of the railroad crossing
A $1.6 million project studying the feasibility of 1.1 miles of FM 2331 from FM 4 to Spring Ranch Road to eventually realign the road and design a proposed interchange at State Highway 171 with a grade separation over the railroad
A $1.3 million project to improve the .1 mile intersection of FM 2738 and County Road 528
A $1.3 million project studying the feasibility of extending FM 2331 8.7 miles from U.S. Route 67 to State Highway 174 as a western loop around Lake Pat Cleburne and Downtown Cleburne
A $1.2 million project to improve the .1 mile intersection of FM 731 and County Road 714, widening County Road 714 to three lanes at the intersection with left and right turn lanes and assessing whether a traffic signal is warranted at the intersection
An $800,000 project studying and improving the safety of 6.5 miles of U.S. Route 67 from SPUR 102 to Interstate Highway 35, which may involve adding turn lanes, adjusting medians and adding signage
City Council discusses deterring egrets and upcoming changes to BRiCk and Centennial Park
BURLESON – The Burleson City Council discussed egret-deterrence plans and upcoming changes to the Burleson Recreation Center and Centennial Park October 21 at City Hall.
At the meeting, Burleson community services director DeAnna Phillips presented proposed plans for deterring egrets in 2025 and beyond.
An egret rookery, which can be a nuisance and cause property damage and health concerns with the amount of excrement the birds leave in the area, was established in the Shady Oaks area in 2024.
Spartans lose on walk-off touchdown to Red Oak on Homecoming Night
BURLESON — The Centennial Spartans lost 41-39 to the Red Oak Hawks as Red Oak’s Billy Middleton scored a game-winning touchdown as time expired Friday at Burleson ISD Stadium in Centennial’s homecoming game.
The junior quarterback Hamilton’s game-winning one-yard touchdown run completed Red Oak’s drive after Centennial took a 39-35 lead on a rushing touchdown—and failed a two-point conversion attempt—with under a minute left in the fourth quarter.
After Red Oak scored three unanswered touchdowns in the third quarter to take a 28-21 lead into the fourth, Centennial had a chance to tie the game when sophomore quarterback Jacob Torres connected with senior receiver Damien Long on a seven-yard touchdown pass, but Centennial missed the extra-point attempt, bringing the score to 28-27 with about 11 minutes left in the game.
Torres completed 15 of 32 passes for 222 yards and two touchdown passes with an interception. Long led Centennial with six catches for 74 yards and the touchdown.
Centennial creates 20-foot Homecoming mum
BURLESON — The Centennial High School staff created a 20-foot “Texas-sized” mum for homecoming week after principal Dena Schimming thought of the idea earlier in the school year.
