CLEBURNE, Texas – The Cleburne Railroaders (40-41) advanced to fourth place after going 3-3 against the Lake Country DockHounds (40-40) last week at La Moderna Field.
The .500 performance in the series was good enough for Cleburne to jump over the Kane County Cougars (39-42) in the East Division as Kane County went 1-5 last week.
Cleburne split the series against Lake Country despite outscoring its opponent 47-33 in the six games.
Cleburne scored five runs and surrendered at least six in each of its three losses to Lake Country. Cleburne scored 14 runs in each of their two victories Tuesday and Wednesday and beat Lake Country 4-2 in the lowest-scoring game of the series Saturday.
Hill Alexander led Cleburne with eight runs scored and six walks as he went 7-for-21 at the plate with two home runs and four RBIs against Lake Country last week. Alexander is batting .276 with 19 home runs, 57 RBIs and 67 runs scored in 2023.
The newly acquired Johnathon Tripp (3-2) led Cleburne with 10 and 2/3 innings pitched and 12 strikeouts against Lake Country last week.
Tripp earned the win as he surrendered one earned run off five hits and struck out five batters through four innings of relief as Cleburne beat Lake Country 14-3 Tuesday. He was in-line for the win as he held Lake Country to two runs through six and 2/3 innings pitched before Nick Gardewine surrendered four runs in the top of the ninth inning in Cleburne’s 6-5 loss in the series finale Sunday.
The Chicago Dogs traded Tripp to Cleburne August 7 for a player to be named later.
Kevin Hilton (7-3) was the only other Cleburne pitcher to pitch a quality start as he surrendered two earned runs off six hits and struck out four batters through eight innings pitched in Cleburne’s 4-2 victory Saturday.
Travis Perry (6-6) fell an inning short of a quality start but earned the victory as he surrendered two earned runs off eight hits and a walk and struck out four batters through five innings pitched in Cleburne’s 14-6 victory Wednesday.
Bret Boswell led Cleburne with three home runs as he went 6-for-23 at the plate with seven RBIs, five runs scored and three walks against Lake Country last week. Boswell is batting .356 with six home runs and 21 RBIs in 18 games for Cleburne in 2023.
Zach Nehrir, Jose Sermo, Elmer Reyes and Alexander each hit two home runs against Lake Country last week. Sermo leads Cleburne with 20 home runs in 2023.
Tanner Riley (2-2) continued his scoreless streak for Cleburne as he pitched three and 2/3 shutout relief innings in two games against Lake Country. Since joining Cleburne in July, Riley’s pitched 11 and 2/3 innings in 6 games without giving up a run.
Joe Corbett (2-3) pitched two and 1/3 shutout relief innings in two games as he returned to Cleburne last week after being transferred to Generales de Durango of the Mexican League July 31. Corbett has 58 strikeouts in 32 innings for Cleburne in 2023.
Cleburne released Michael Wong to make room for Corbett after Wong surrendered seven earned runs through three and 2/3 innings pitched in Cleburne’s 9-5 loss to Lake Country Thursday.
Cleburne begins a six-game series against Chicago Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Impact Field in Rosemont, Illinois. Cleburne is two games behind Chicago for second place in the East and the second wildcard spot.
Cleburne is six games behind the Milwaukee Milkmen for first place in the East with three weeks left in the regular season.
