The Sports Report: Lady Elks in playoff spot after 2-0 week
Plus, Spartans fall two-points shy of perfect week, Lady Spartans fall to Timberview again, dominate Seguin, Izuagbe scores 25 in Elks loss to Seguin in 0-2 week

Thanks for tuning into today’s edition of The Burleson Buzz Sports Report.
This week, the Burleson Lady Elks varsity basketball team went 2-0 and moved into the fourth and final playoff spot in the District 8-5A standings going into the last week of the regular season. The third-place Lady Spartans went 1-1, including a loss to #2-ranked Mansfield-Timberview. The Spartans also went 1-1, including a one-point loss to Arlington-Seguin. The Elks’ Tamaje Izuagbe scored 25 points in a loss as the Elks went 0-2 this week.
This week also featured Burleson and Centennial basketball players announcing college-sports commitments. Lady Elks senior forward Kendall Carlock announced she’s playing basketball at Western Texas College. Spartans senior guards Iverson Moore and Aidan Hicks announced they’re playing football at Angelo State University and Emporia State University, respectively.
Lady Elks in playoff spot after 2-0 week
BURLESON and CLEBURNE – After beating the Arlington Seguin Lady Cougars Tuesday at BHS Arena and the Cleburne Lady Yellow Jackets Friday in Cleburne, the Burleson Lady Elks varsity basketball team moved into fourth place, the final playoff-spot going into the last week of the regular season.
Senior guard Brinkley Hall led the Lady Elks with 12 points in the 57-29 win over Seguin and 16 in the 43-40 win over Cleburne.
Hall was a perfect three-for-three from the free-throw line in each game. She made five-of-eight field-goal attempts, including one-of-three three-pointers at Cleburne Friday.
Courtlyn Middlebrook was the Lady Elks’ second-leading scorer in each game as she scored 11 against Seguin and 10 against Cleburne.
Senior forward Kendall Carlock, who scored eight points in each game, announced on X (Twitter) her commitment to play basketball at Western Texas College Tuesday.
The fourth-place Lady Elks (8-6 in district) play the eighth-place Joshua Lady Owls (4-9) Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. at BHS Arena and play at the sixth-place Midlothian Lady Panthers (5-9) Friday at 5:30 p.m.
Spartans fall two-points shy of perfect week
BURLESON and ARLINGTON – The Centennial Spartans varsity basketball team fell two points shy of a perfect week as they lost 42-41 to the Arlington Seguin Cougars Friday in Arlington after beating the Mansfield Timberview Wolves 50-39 Tuesday at Spartan Arena.
Seguin outscored the Spartans 12-10 in the fourth quarter to win after the Spartans led 31-30 at the end of the third quarter. The Spartans led 12-5 at the end of the first quarter, but Seguin came back and led 20-18 at halftime.
Junior guard Abram Hicks led the Spartans with 15 points, five rebounds, five steals and four assists against Seguin. He also led the Spartans with 18 points and 11 rebounds against Timberview Tuesday.
The Spartans outscored Timberview 20-4 in the third quarter to take a 35-19 lead into the fourth quarter.
Sophomore guard Keylan Jones was the Spartans’ second-leading scorer with 10 points against Seguin Friday. Jones also led the Spartans with five assists against Timberview Tuesday.
Senior guard Iverson Moore was the second-leading scorer with nine points against Timberview. Moore announced on X (Twitter) his commitment to play football at Angelo State University January 20.
Also announcing his college-football commitment last week was senior guard Aiden Hicks (Abram’s brother), who will play at Emporia State University.
The Spartans (5-7 in district, 10-18 overall) are in fifth place in district behind Seguin (6-6, 17-12) for the final playoff spot with four games left in the 2023-24 regular season.
The Spartans host the eighth-place Cleburne Yellow Jackets Tuesday at 8 p.m. at Spartan Arena and play at the ninth-place Joshua Owls Friday at 8 p.m.
Lady Spartans fall to Timberview again, dominate Seguin
BURLESON and ARLINGTON – Jordyn McNeal led the Lady Spartans in scoring as the Lady Spartans fell 80-36 to the Mansfield Timberview Lady Wolves Tuesday at Spartan Arena and beat the Arlington Seguin Lady Cougars 46-10 Friday.
The senior forward McNeal scored 10 points in the Lady Spartans’ second loss to Timberview, the #2-team in Texas and scored 16 points in Friday’s win over Seguin.
Lady Spartans head coach Brooke Robinson stated senior forward Macie Grosskurth and junior forward Kyla Mohan played great defense in the loss to Timberview Tuesday.
On the offensive end, Grosskurth was the Lady Spartans’ second-leading scorer with nine points against Timberview.
Sophomore guard Lyric Caldwell was the second-leading scorer with 13 points against Seguin.
The third-place Lady Spartans (9-4 in district, 22-9 overall) host the seventh-place Cleburne Lady Yellow Jackets (4-8, 15-15) Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Spartan Arena and play at the eighth-place Joshua Lady Owls (4-9, 16-15) Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Izuagbe scores 25 in Elks loss to Seguin in 0-2 week
BURLESON and CLEBURNE – The Burleson Elks varsity basketball team fell 81-41 to the Arlington Seguin Cougars Tuesday and 65-34 to the Cleburne Yellow Jackets Friday.
Elks senior guard Tamaje Izuagbe scored a game-high 25 points in the loss to Seguin Tuesday.
The Elks (3-9 in district, 13-19 overall) are two games behind fourth-place Seguin (6-6, 17-12) with four games left in the 2023-24 regular season.
The Elks host the ninth-place Joshua Owls (1-8, 5-19) Tuesday at 7 p.m. and play at the third-place Midlothian Panthers (8-3, 18-10) Friday at 8 p.m.
