With six games left in the season, Burleson’s and Centennial’s varsity basketball teams were inconsistent over the week. The Spartans, Lady Spartans and Lady Elks each went 1-1, and the Elks went 0-2.
The Spartans had their two-game win streaked snapped Friday as the Lady Spartans snapped their own two-game losing streak.
The Lady Spartans and Lady Elks are in third and fourth place, respectively. The Spartans and Elks are in sixth and seventh place.

Spartans split week against Heritage and Summit, Hicks and Jones lead in scoring
BURLESON and MANSFIELD – The Centennial Spartans varsity basketball team went 1-1 over the week, beating the Midlothian Heritage Jaguars 76-57 Tuesday and losing to the Mansfield Summit Jaguars 59-51 Friday.
Junior guard Abram Hicks led the Spartans in points and rebounds both games. Sophomore guard Keylan Jones was the team’s second-leading scorer and led in assists.
The Spartans (4-6 in district, 9-17 overall) are in sixth place and a half-game out of the playoffs behind the Arlington Seguin Cougars (4-6, 15-12) and Heritage (4-5, 12-13) with six games left in the 2023-24 regular season. Summit (9-0, 17-8) is in first place.
Before losing to Summit Friday, the Spartans won their last two games, beating their crosstown-rival the Burleson Elks January 9 and beating Heritage Wednesday.
Abram Hicks and Keylan Jones combined for 41 points in the Spartans’ win over Heritage at Spartan Arena.
Hicks scored a team-high 22 points, led the Spartans with five rebounds and three steals and added three assists.
Jones scored 19 points, led the Spartans with four assists and added three rebounds and a steal.
The Spartans outscored Heritage 65-32 through the first three quarters, including a 22-9 second quarter, before Heritage outscored them 25-11 in the fourth quarter to bring the game within 20 points.
It seems the Spartans were able to hold onto momentum in the first quarter against Summit Friday, leading 17-2 at the end of the quarter, but they were outscored in each of the remaining three quarters, including 22-12 in the fourth quarter.
Hicks led the Spartans with 17 points and seven rebounds and tied for the team-lead with three assists in the loss.
Jones tied Hicks with three assists and added 12 points and a team-high three steals.
Senior guard Iverson Moore scored double-digits in both games, scoring 11 points against Heritage and 10 against Summit. Junior forward Jared Cox led the Spartans with seven blocks across both games.
The Spartans host the second-place Mansfield Timberview Wolves (9-1, 22-6) Tuesday at 8 p.m. in Burleson and play at Seguin Friday at 7 p.m.
Lady Spartans bounce back after two-game skid, Lady Elks split, Elks lose two straight
BURLESON and MANSFIELD – Over the week the Lady Spartans varsity basketball team beat the Mansfield Summit Lady Jaguars 53-41 Friday after losing their last two games, the Burleson Lady Elks beat Summit Tuesday but fell to the number-three ranked Mansfield Timberview Lady Wolves Friday, and the Elks lost to Summit and Timberview.
Before beating Summit 53-41 Friday, the Lady Spartans lost two straight games for the first time in the 2023-24 season, losing to the crosstown-rival Lady Elks January 9 and losing 40-31 to the Midlothian Heritage Lady Jaguars Wednesday at Spartan Arena.
The loss to Heritage (8-3 in district, 21-9 overall) moved the Lady Spartans (8-3, 21-8) into third place behind Heritage and Timberview (12-0, 30-1).
The Lady Elks also beat Summit over the week, winning 47-33 Wednesday at BHS Arena behind a team-high 18 points from senior forward Kendall Carlock. The Lady Elks then lost 68-31 at Timberview Friday.
The Lady Elks (4-5, 12-11) are in fourth place ahead of Summit (3-4, 7-18) for the final playoff spot with six games left in the regular season.
The Elks (3-7, 13-17) are in seventh place after losing 74-30 to Summit at BHS Arena Wednesday and 59-44 at Timberview Friday.
The Lady Spartans have a chance to avenge themselves against Timberview Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Spartan Arena. Timberview beat the Lady Spartans 83-38 December 12 in Mansfield in the Lady Spartans’ first district-loss of the 2023-24 season. The Lady Spartans also play at Seguin Friday at 6:30 p.m.
Burleson hosts Seguin Tuesday with the Lady Elks playing at 5:30 p.m. and the Elks playing at 7 p.m. They travel to Cleburne Friday for the Lady Elks to play the seventh-place Lady Yellow Jackets at 5:30 p.m. and the Elks to play the ninth-place Yellow Jackets at 7 p.m.
