BURLESON and MIDLOTHIAN – Julian Trettel hit a game-winning three-point shot from just beyond half-court as time expired to give the Burleson Elks varsity basketball team a 55-54 win over the Midlothian Panthers Friday in Midlothian and keep the Elks in the playoff hunt.
Midlothian missed a free-throw that would’ve made it a three-point game with seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Elks senior forward Logan Mack grabbed the rebound off the missed free-throw and passed the ball past half-court to junior guard Trettel, who hit the game-winning buzzer-beater as he fell to the ground and sent Elks fans into a frenzy.
Trettel’s buzzer-beater, his only made shot of the game, helped the Elks avoid squandering a 44-39 lead they held at the end of the third quarter. Midlothian outscored the Elks 15-11 in the fourth quarter.
The win keeps the sixth-place Elks (5-9 in district, 15-19 overall) in the playoff hunt as they’re two games behind the crosstown-rival Centennial Spartans (7-7, 12-18) and Seguin Cougars (7-7, 18-13) for the fourth and final district playoff spot with two games left in the regular season.
The Elks face the Spartans Friday at 8 p.m. at Spartan Arena in a game that could determine who wins or ties for fourth-place. If the Spartans or Seguin win Tuesday or Friday, the Elks will be eliminated.
Senior guard Tamaje Izuagbe scored a game-high 14 points in the win over Midlothian. Sophomore guard Nate Silva was the game’s second-leading scorer with 13 points.
The victory was the Elks their second in a row as they snapped a four-game losing-streak and beat the Joshua Owls 59-38 Tuesday at BHS Arena.

Izuagbe and his brother, sophomore forward Trey Hall each scored a game-high 19 points against Joshua.
The Elks won’t play until their matchup against the Spartans Friday before they play their last game of the 2023-24 regular season against the seventh-place Midlothian Heritage Jaguars February 13 at 7 p.m. at BHS Arena.
