Weekly Newsletter: CAD Board extends chief appraiser's contract before opposing electees take office, Burleson CERT thriving and looking to expand
Plus, a good-as-it-gets week for basketball in Burleson in the Sports Report
Merry Christmas, readers,
I hope everyone of you has a blessed day with your family and friends.
This is technically my almost-two-year-old son’s first Christmas since last year he wasn’t quite sentient enough to know what was going on, so I’ll be spending the day watching him experience the magic with my wife.
Speaking of my wife, if you want to go “full Elf mode” today, give her hot-cocoa poke-cake recipe a try.
I really appreciate you all for making this a special Christmas for me by supporting this newsletter.
Don’t forget to tell your family and friends about The Burleson Buzz today!
Again, Merry Christmas.
Onto the news.

Johnson County CAD Board extends chief appraiser’s contract before opposing electees take office
Johnson County CAD Board extends chief appraiser’s contract before opposing electees take office
“It makes me uncomfortable knowing they’ve committed us as a board and committed Mr. Hudspeth to a situation we may be uncomfortable with,” Johnson County-CAD Board electee Duane Goulding said.
The Johnson County Central Appraisal District board extended chief appraiser Jim Hudspeth’s contract three years despite board-electees requesting a shorter extension at the board meeting December 14 at the district’s office.
At the meeting, board electees Amy Lingo and John Wood requested the board extend Hudspeth’s contract for a shorter period of time to allow them to do their due diligence and determine whether a longer extension is necessary.
The board chose to extend Hudspeth’s contract three years despite Lingo’s and Wood’s request after discussing it in executive session at the meeting.
Cleburne property tax-reform proponent Craig Hundley, who advocated for Lingo, Wood and fellow electee Duane Goulding before the election, believes the board awarded Hudspeth this contract to make it harder for the electees to make changes to the board when they take office, Hundley said.

The Burleson Community Emergency Response Team is thriving and looking to expand
The Burleson Community Emergency Response Team is thriving and looking to expand
“It’s wonderful to rely on other people, say, first responders, but I know it’s empowering to be able to help yourself,” said Burleson CERT program manager Griselda Finestead, who originally joined Burleson CERT as a volunteer in 2005 to learn how to protect her family as a stay-at-home pregnant mother of two. “A lot of people want to be able to do that but don’t have the training, and that’s where we come in.”
When disaster strikes, communities are reminded why its first-responders are so important. Some disasters can require more than first-responders though. If such a disaster ever strikes Burleson, the community will be ready because of its Community Emergency Response Team.
Burleson CERT, a group of disaster response-trained volunteers ready to serve the community when they’re needed, is thriving, Burleson emergency operations manager Joe Laster says. The program’s grown 81% to 38 members in 2023 and now offers two annual trainings and condensed training for private businesses after originally offering one annual training.
Sports Report: Spartans earn first district-win behind 17 from Jones and a Cox double-double
Last week was as good as it gets for basketball in Burleson as each varsity team from the two high schools won their respective games.
Centennial took care of Cleburne as the Spartans earned their first district-win of the season behind 17 points from Keylan Jones and a 13-point, 14-rebound performance from Jared Cox, and Ellie Stanley led the Lady Spartans with 12 points in an overtime win. The Elks and Lady Elks also took care of business as they both earned wins against Joshua.

“You’ve got a lawn guy, you’ve got a plumber, but you don’t have a tech guy,” he says. “You have more tech at your house than anybody’s ever had in the history of the world, and you have nobody looking after it.”
