Weekly Newsletter: Council discusses costly changes to the BRiCk
Plus, more from Monday's city council meeting and a look at where the Burleson and Centennial basketball teams are at the new year
Hi, readers,
Thanks for your patience with this newsletter being published a day later than usual. I wanted to include the Monday city council meeting recap.
Monday’s meeting was interesting. The council discussed renovating the BRiCk’s lobby for $5 million, approved increasing the BRiCk’s fees, attempted to get ahead of a potential alcohol-sales election and picked an election location.
Something that was talked about at the meeting was how the city plans to advertise to citizens when and where to vote.
I plan to provide plenty of coverage on city elections to make sure my readers are informed. That said, voters can vote early from April 22 to April 30 from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday April 27 and vote from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Election Day. All voting will be at the sub courthouse.
Onto the news.

Council discusses $5 million rec-center renovation and approved parks-and-rec fee-increases
The Burleson City Council discussed a $5 million recreation-center renovation and approved parks-and-recreation fee-increases and more Monday at City Hall.
The council also established liquor-store zoning and decided where to hold the May general election and more.
The BRiCk renovation would include removing the rock-climbing boulder and using the space for a lounge and seating area and more. The BRiCk’s increased fees include increasing monthly membership contracts 10%, adding a non-resident daily pass and more.
In anticipation of an approval of a local option election for liquor sales in Burleson, the council also established zoning for liquor-stores.
The council also decided to hold the May 4 election at the sub courthouse.

Sports Report: Lady Spartans start 2024 2-0 and finish first-half of district-play in second place
With 2023 ending and 2024 beginning in the middle of the high-school basketball season, I thought it’d be a good time get the teams’ coaches’ thoughts on how last year went and their outlooks on the new year.
The Lady Spartans finished 2023 in second place and carried their strong play into the new year, beating Joshua Tuesday and Midlothian Friday. The Lady Elks also started 2024 with a win after “buying in” to head coach Brenda Gomez’s approach in 2023. The Spartans are also carrying momentum into the new year and learning to embrace individual roles after winning four of five games to end a lackluster first half of the 2023-24 season. The Elks have been all head coach Anthony Dees could ask for after a 3-13 district-season in 2022-23, in which they lost seniors and gave way to the current young, two-senior team.
This reports comes before the schools face off in crosstown-rivalry games Tuesday with the Lady Spartans heading to Burleson High School to play the Lady Elks at 5:30 p.m. and the Spartans taking on the Elks at 7 p.m.
