SOCCER: Lady Spartans shutout Birdville, win Bi-District Championship
KENNEDALE – The Centennial Lady Spartans varsity soccer team beat the Birdville Lady Hawks 2-0 to win the Bi-District Championship Monday at Kennedale High School.
After the first half ended 0-0, Centennial scored twice in the second half to come away with the win. Senior forward Kristine Garcia and sophomore midfielder Hazel Curs scored Centennial’s goals.
In an interview with GM Sports Media’s Brian Gosset after the game, Centennial head coach Heather McMahan said the “high pressure” Centennial put on Birdville in the second half is what allowed Centennial to win.
Burleson City Council Place 3 Candidates
BURLESON – With councilmember Ronnie Johnson retiring at the end of his term, Burleson will elect one of Alexa Boedeker or Brandon Crisp to replace him on the city council in May.
While neither candidate has run for city council before, they both have experience being involved in their community.
Boedeker, a realtor, has served on Burleson’s Commission 4B and chaired the City Impact Committee. Crisp, a software engineer, has a Master’s degree in public administration, has worked as a Georgia Department of Labor tax-auditor and ran for Georgia’s state government.
“I’m not very good at just being a complainer,” Boedeker said of her desire to be involved with the city. “I think you should be out there doing something about [the issues].”
Crisp’s desire to be involved comes from a fascination with the way governments operate, he said.
The most involved Crisp has been in government was during his internship with a Georgia county commissioner. In that role Crisp spearheaded the development of an app to improve communications within the department.
Boedeker may have been most involved in government when she owned a small-business, “Sassy Frass Children’s Boutique,” in Old Town. Having opened the business in 2010, Boedeker regularly interacted with the city-government while Old Town was going through construction.
Joshua approves four-day school-week
JOSHUA – The Joshua Independent School District Board of Trustees approved a hybrid four-day school-week in the 2024-25 school-year at the board meeting Monday at the Joshua ISD Administration Building.
Joshua ISD believes the four-day school-week gives the district a hiring advantage and incentivizes teachers to stay with the district by allowing “more flexibility for planning, grading, and professional development,” the district stated Tuesday. Joshua ISD believes this will ultimately benefit students, according to its statement.
“This would allow for higher student and staff attendance, benefiting students academically and reducing reliance on substitutes, which have been in short supply in Texas,” Joshua ISD stated in regard to the 2024-25 school-year calendar offering more time for students and staff to attend extracurricular events, personal appointments and more.
Joshua ISD schools won’t be in session Mondays in the 2024-25 school-year except for certain periods including during August and April to establish a routine at the beginning of the school-year and to accommodate testing periods in April, Joshua ISD stated Tuesday.
