Lady Spartans hit program-record eight home runs in one inning in another dominant week
ARLINGTON and BURLESON – The Centennial Lady Spartans varsity softball team hit a single-game program-record eight home runs – all in one inning – in a 20-1 win over the Seguin Cougars Thursday at Seguin High School in another dominant week for the Lady Spartans.
The Lady Spartans also beat the Cleburne Lady Yellow Jackets 10-0 on Ava Ellis’s complete-game shutout Friday at Centennial before finishing the week with a 3-0 loss to the Grandview Lady Zebras in a “practice playoff game” Saturday at Centennial.
In a 16-run top-half of the third inning against Seguin, senior shortstop Bailey Lindemuth and junior center-fielder Madison Haynes each hit two home runs with freshman starting-pitcher Ellis, junior right-fielder Alyssa Mayner, senior third-baseman Hannah McCurry and senior left-fielder Olivia Martin each hitting a bomb of their own.
Applegate pitches quality start and homers as Spartans split series with Cleburne
CLEBURNE, BURLESON and DUNCANVILLE – Zach Applegate earned a quality-start win on the mound and homered at the plate as the Centennial Spartans varsity baseball team split the series against the Cleburne Yellow Jackets, moving Cleburne out of first place last week.
The senior starting-pitcher/first-baseman Applegate threw five shutout innings – striking out 11 while surrendering one hit and four walks – as the Spartans beat the then first-place Yellow Jackets 4-1 Tuesday in Cleburne. Batting cleanup, Applegate went 2-for-4 with a double and a game-high three RBIs in the win.
Lady Elks eliminated from playoff contention with 1-0 loss to Joshua
CLEBURNE and BURLESON – The Burleson Lady Elks varsity softball team has been eliminated from playoff contention as their 1-0 loss to the Joshua Lady Owls Friday pushed them 1.5 games behind the fourth-place Midlothian-Heritage Lady Jaguars with one regular-season game left.
Sophomore starting-pitcher Ryan Hovland followed a winning performance in a 7-0 win over the Cleburne Lady Yellow Jackets Tuesday with a valiant effort against third-place Joshua – surrendering one unearned run off four hits and no walks with eight strikeouts in a complete game and going 1-for-3 at the plate – in a 1-0 loss for the Lady Elks Friday at Burleson High School.
Elks swept by Joshua, eliminated from playoff contention
JOSHUA and BURLESON – The Burleson Elks varsity baseball team was eliminated from playoff contention after being swept by the Joshua Owls last week, pushing them 4.5 games behind the fourth-place crosstown-rival Centennial Spartans with two games left in the regular season.
The Elks were eliminated when they lost 5-4 in extra innings to the Owls in Joshua Tuesday after the Spartans beat Cleburne to take a 3.5-game lead over the Elks with just three regular-season games remaining.
