Four city meetings this week, Lady Spartans break record with playoff-clinching win, Trettel’s buzzer-beater keeps Elks’ playoff hopes alive, more from the Sports Report and the Buzz Bulletin
Hi, readers.
Thanks for supporting The Burleson Buzz and reading this edition of the weekly newsletter.
While this newsletter edition is heavy on sports, there could be some interesting government and city-development news out of the four Burleson city-government meetings this week. City Council is going to be discussing the Burleson Public Library’s master plan, which includes a $52 million library-build.
I’ll be going to Monday night’s City Council meeting and publishing a recap Tuesday morning. To have the meeting-recap sent directly to your inbox as soon as it’s published, please consider supporting The Burleson Buzz and becoming a paid subscriber.
In a big week for basketball in Burleson last week, the Centennial Lady Spartans broke their record for most regular-season wins as they clinched the playoffs, the Burleson Elks’ junior Julian Trettel hit a crazy game-winning three-point buzzer-beater to keep the Elks in the playoff hunt and more. It’s now the final week of the regular season — a week that will conclude with the Spartans hosting the Elks in what could be a playoff-deciding game.
Onto the news.

Lady Spartans break record with playoff-clinching win
BURLESON and JOSHUA – The Centennial Lady Spartans varsity basketball team beat the Cleburne Lady Yellow Jackets 44-34 to earn their playoff-clinching 23rd victory of the season and break the Lady Spartan team-win record Tuesday at Spartan Arena.
Lady Spartans head coach Brooke Robinson said she’s proud of the team and coaches for breaking the record in a season that “hasn’t been easy.”
“I try not to concentrate so much on records, but because this is the team record, it’s something I was really proud of with this group,” Robinson said. “Especially with this group because when you say ‘It takes a total team-effort,’ it really does.”
Trettel’s buzzer-beater keeps Elks’ playoff hopes alive
BURLESON and MIDLOTHIAN – Julian Trettel hit a game-winning three-point shot from just beyond half-court as time expired to give the Burleson Elks varsity basketball team a 55-54 win over the Midlothian Panthers Friday in Midlothian and keep the Elks in the playoff hunt.
Midlothian missed a free-throw that would’ve made it a three-point game with seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Elks senior forward Logan Mack grabbed the rebound off the missed free-throw and passed the ball past half-court to junior guard Trettel, who hit the game-winning buzzer-beater as he fell to the ground and sent Elks fans into a frenzy.
The Sports Report: February 4, 2024
Entering the final week of the 2023-24 varsity-basketball season, the record-breaking Lady Spartans are the only Burleson team with a playoff-spot clinched.
