Lady Spartans break record with playoff-clinching win
BURLESON and JOSHUA – The Centennial Lady Spartans varsity basketball team beat the Cleburne Lady Yellow Jackets 44-34 to earn their playoff-clinching 23rd victory of the season and break the Lady Spartan team-win record Tuesday at Spartan Arena.
Lady Spartans head coach Brooke Robinson said she’s proud of the team and coaches for breaking the record in a season that “hasn’t been easy.”
“I try not to concentrate so much on records, but because this is the team record, it’s something I was really proud of with this group,” Robinson said. “Especially with this group because when you say ‘It takes a total team-effort,’ it really does.”
Trettel’s buzzer-beater keeps Elks’ playoff hopes alive
BURLESON and MIDLOTHIAN – Julian Trettel hit a game-winning three-point shot from just beyond half-court as time expired to give the Burleson Elks varsity basketball team a 55-54 win over the Midlothian Panthers Friday in Midlothian and keep the Elks in the playoff hunt.
Midlothian missed a free-throw that would’ve made it a three-point game with seconds remaining in the fourth quarter. Elks senior forward Logan Mack grabbed the rebound off the missed free-throw and passed the ball past half-court to junior guard Trettel, who hit the game-winning buzzer-beater as he fell to the ground and sent Elks fans into a frenzy.
Spartans 2-0 last week, tied with Seguin for final playoff spot
BURLESON and JOSHUA – The Centennial Spartans varsity basketball team is tied with the Seguin Cougars for the fourth and final playoff spot after beating the Cleburne Yellow Jackets 82-49 Tuesday at Spartan Arena and beating the Joshua Owls 66-34 Friday in Joshua.
After the Spartans (7-7 in district, 12-18 overall) beat Joshua and Seguin (7-7, 18-13) lost 57-52 to the first-place undefeated-in-district Mansfield Summit Jaguars Friday, the Spartans officially tied Seguin for fourth-place.
Lady Elks’ playoff-fate to be determined this week
BURLESON and MIDLOTHIAN – The Burleson Lady Elks varsity basketball team’s playoff-fate will be determined by a game between the Mansfield Summit Lady Jaguars and Cleburne Lady Yellow Jackets Tuesday in Mansfield.
If fifth-place Summit (8-7 in district, 12-21 overall) beats Cleburne Tuesday, they’ll tie the fourth-place Lady Elks (9-7, 17-13) and get to play them in a playoff-tiebreaker game. If Cleburne beats Summit, the Lady Elks secure fourth-place and clinch the playoffs.
