Lady Elks and Lady Spartans fall in Bi-District Championship games, Izuagbe scores 21 in last game as Elk, Spartans eliminated, The Buzz Bulletin weekly event-calendar
Last week was a significant week for Burleson and Centennial basketball as the 2023-24 high school varsity basketball season ended with the record-breaking Lady Spartans and Lady Elks each losing their respective Bi-District Championship games, the Elks falling in overtime on their Senior Night and the Spartans being eliminated from playoff-contention as Seguin won fourth place with a tiebreaker.
More significant news from Burleson High School was the Burleson Police Department’s discovery of a handgun inside the vehicle of an unauthorized person BPD arrested for trespassing at the school. BPD stated it wouldn’t provide further details while the investigation is ongoing at 6:10 p.m. Thursday.
I wish I had more to publish on the handgun-at-BHS situation, but I haven’t had time to contact anyone about it because I’ve been busy with my day job and personal stuff.
Being too busy kept me from publishing a sports report last week, but all the articles I wrote last week that are in the newsletter today are sports articles.
With basketball season finished, I’m shifting my sports-coverage focus to baseball and softball. To the soccer players, powerlifters, cheerleaders and other student-athletes The Burleson Buzz hasn’t covered, please be patient as I look to expand sports coverage.
Along with this week being the first week covering baseball and softball, I’ll be covering the Burleson City Council meeting Tuesday (not usual Monday because of President’s Day).

Onto the news.
Lady Elks fall to Denton-Ryan in Bi-District Championship
HALTOM CITY – The Burleson Lady Elks varsity basketball team was eliminated from the playoffs as they fell 50-37 to the Denton Ryan Lady Raiders Tuesday at W.G. Thomas Coliseum.
After the Lady Elks outscored the District 7-5A champion Denton-Ryan 16-9 in the third quarter to bring the score to 36-28 to start the fourth quarter, Denton-Ryan outscored the Lady Elks 14-9 in the final quarter to seal their Bi-District Championship victory.
Lady Elks senior forward Kendall Carlock scored nine of her team-leading 16 points in the third quarter as the Lady Elks cut Denton-Ryan’s from 15 at halftime to eight by the end of the third quarter. Carlock also grabbed a game-high 12 rebounds and added a game-high three steals.
“[Carlock] is something every small child should idolize because of her character and her work ethic and her true feeling for the sport and how she honors that and will always be a contender because she wants it,” Lady Elks head coach Brenda Gomez said after the loss.
Lady Spartans’ historic season ends with Bi-District Championship loss to Argyle
HALTOM CITY – The Centennial Lady Spartans varsity basketball team was eliminated from the playoffs as they fell 68-27 to the Argyle Lady Eagles Tuesday at W.G. Thomas Coliseum.
The Lady Spartans hung in at first, trailing 9-8 at the end of the first quarter but were outscored in every quarter thereafter. Argyle outscored the Lady Spartans 17-2 in the second quarter to take a 26-10 halftime lead and never looked back.
“First quarter we executed, but we didn’t sustain the rest of the way,” Lady Spartans head coach Brooke Robinson stated after the loss. “We needed to match that intensity each possession.”
Izuagbe scored 21 as Elks fall in overtime on Senior Night
BURLESON – Tamaje Izuagbe scored a game-high 21 points in his final game for the Burleson Elks varsity basketball team as the Elks lost 64-63 in overtime to the Midlothian Heritage Jaguars Tuesday at BHS Arena.
In a valiant effort to leave the program with a Senior Night win, the senior guard Izuagbe scored 10 of his 21 points in the fourth quarter and overtime. He went four-for-four from the free-throw line in overtime.
In a back-and-forth game, the Elks led 15-12 at the end of the first quarter. Heritage outscored the Elks 35-26 in the second and third quarters, taking a 47-41 lead into the fourth quarter.
Spartans eliminated from playoff-contention
BURLESON — Despite finishing the season with the same district-record as the playoff-bound Arlington Seguin Cougars, the Centennial Spartans varsity basketball team is eliminated from playoff-contention.
With Seguin’s 44-41 win over the Cleburne Yellow Jackets Tuesday in Cleburne, Seguin tied the Spartans at 8-8 in district. Because Seguin (8-8 in district, 19-14 overall) went 2-0 against the Spartans this season, they held the tiebreaker and won the fourth and final playoff spot of District 8-5A.
